Martin Luther: "music can awaken our God-given emotions, and help us to learn about God and His work"

Eph. 2:8-10 "For by grace you have been saved..."

"Theologian (Protestant Reformation) Martin Luther valued the musical tradition of the church. He believed that music could “arouse devotion and is a tool of the Holy Spirit.” He thought that music “can awaken our God-given emotions, and help us to learn about God and His work on our behalf in Christ.” Luther wrote the following concerning music:

Whether you wish to comfort the sad, to terrify the happy, to encourage the despairing, to humble the proud, to calm the passionate, or to appease those full of hate — and who could number all these masters of the human heart, namely, the emotions, inclinations, and affections that impel men to evil or good?—what more effective means than music could you find?"
