We believe in the love which God has for us

Cyberbrethen: "God is love: How to understand the Holy trinity"

"I’m preaching in a few minutes at CPH chapel this morning on the Holy Trinity.

The Bible verses we will meditate together on are from 1 John 4:8 and 4:19: “God is love” and “We love [God] because He first loved us.”

These were the first Bible verses I ever memorized, as a young boy in Lutheran day school. For some reason, the Holy Spirit has allowed me to remember this all my life. I still remember in first grade being very excited, proud and happy to be able to recite these two Bible verses.

They are simple, yet, the most profound words we have in Scripture and one can never, ever, mine their depth completely.

St. Augustine, as usual, puts matters beautifully when he wrote: “When we come to the subject of love, which is what God is called in Scripture, the Trinity begins to dawn a little, for there is the Lover, the Beloved and Love.” (On the Trinity 15.10).

And then there is the Venerable Bede’s beautiful observation: “We know that Jesus is the Son of God and that the Father has sent him to be the Savior of the world. And we believe in the love which God has for us, the same love which he has for his only-begotten Son, because God did not want his Son to be an only child. He wanted him to have brothers and sisters, and so he adopted us in order that we might share his eternal life.” (On First John)."

"Vi älskar därför att han först har älskat oss" 1 Joh. 4:19. Detta bibelord praktiserat kan också kallas för "Israelteologi" dvs. vi ska älska trots motstånd och tom. hat. Med Guds hjälp är det möjligt att övervinna sig själv.
