Det är bedrövligt, fruktansvärt upprörande. Historiens dom kommer att bli hård."

"Uppgörelsen mellan EU och Turkiet om flyktingarna är en »osmaklig människohandel« och strider mot asylrätten, enligt Advokatsamfundets generalsekreterare Anne Ramberg. --- EU och Turkiet enades under natten till tisdagen om hur man ska hantera flyktingarna som tar sig från Turkiet till EU. Uppgörelsen är inte helt klar än, men går ut på en så kallad en in, en ut-princip.

Den innebär att alla flyktingar som tar sig med båt till Grekland ska skickas tillbaka till Turkiet. För varje syrisk flykting som skickas tillbaka ska EU ta emot en syrisk flykting från Turkiet, för bosättning inom EU. Det behöver inte vara samma person. Flyktingar från andra länder ska också skickas tillbaka till Turkiet, men där gäller inget »utbyte« med EU. --- Uppgörelsen är upprörande, tycker Anne Ramberg, generalsekreterare på Advokatsamfundet.

– Turkiet ger inte asyl till utomeuropeiska flyktingar. När vi skickar tillbaka dem till Turkiet så skickar vi tillbaka dem till ett land som inte ger skydd. Jag tycker att man på goda grunder kan säga att det här strider mot asylrätten. --- Det är ett mycket bra ändamål, att stoppa smugglingen, men det finns inte något som visar att det här skulle få den effekten. Det är inte så att man löser flyktingkrisen, man flyttar den från Europa. Jag tycker att det känns oerhört cyniskt.

Belarus - Ales Bialiatski about EU: "I fear that pragmatism, economic and geopolitical considerations could take priority over human rights"

"Ales Bialiatski, a Belarusian political activist known for his work with Viasna Human Rights Centre, of which he is currently the head. He is also the Vice President of FIDH, the Worldwide Movement for Human Rights. Until recently, Ales Bialiatski was imprisoned by the Belarusian authorities on fabricated charges."

Summary: In Russia they consider organisations like Viasna“foreign agents”…

but in Belarus it’s simpler. "They just close them down. In 2003-2004, they closed next to 400 NGOs, including our centre", (Ales Bialiatski).

"The Minsk diplomatic process" has helped Lukashenko: "and now what takes precedence is the practical approach. I could call it a cynical approach, but it would be better to call it practical.

After the political prisoners were released in August 2015, which was a condition of the EU, nothing changed in the country. But thank God the EU didn’t soften its approach before that. They were patient enough.

When I say nothing changed it’s the position of all human rights organisations. We monitor the situation, we observe the situation in a range of parameters, and no improvements took place. Nevertheless, we will see a full lifting of the sanctions." ---

- Is the lifting of the sanctions a good or a bad thing?

"I think it’s dangerous. In the three months which elapsed since the sanctions were suspended, nothing in Belarus happened. Nevertheless, the EU takes another step toward the Belarus regime, not having received anything in exchange. This is dangerous, because it creates a feeling of permissiveness, ahead of the parliamentary elections in September. Will they be democratic? Would they be transparent? I can already tell you they will not."

The economic situation in Belarus is less disastrous that in Ukraine, don’t you think?

"They have war. In Belarus we don’t, but the economy is going down, and the crisis continues. The social tensions are growing, and certain categories, like small businesses, are protesting, although for the time being, in a very quiet manner. --- Lukashenko is trying to sell the brand “peaceful Belarus”, but the conditions are worsening. And he said he doesn’t intend to change the economic structure of the country, as it was built 20 years ago. 80% of the economy is run by the state. Many enterprises are ineffective, they are fed by the state budget and have no intention to adapt. Lukashenko intends to keep this Soviet-type system, with minor modernisation, in Belarus. Up to now he was successful thanks to the low price of gas, of petrol, and cheap credit from Russia. But Russia can no longer provide this. That’s why Lukashenko is very interested in developing relations with the EU."


--- "Lukashenko remains an important partner of Russia in the military sphere. This is about the Russian military bases in Belarus, the common military exercises which usually take place next to the borders of Lithuania and Poland; about the military equipment they receive from Russia, which is 100% of the country’s armament. And there is political cooperation. Just have a look how Russian and Belarus diplomats advocate the same position at all international fora." --- the Communist regime in Romania, the dictatorship, was worse compared to any country of the Soviet empire. Lukashenko plays the same game. He tries to use the confrontation between the West and Russia for his objectives."

Bialiatski about the opposition i Belarus: "All elections are falsified, the electoral commission as controlled by the executive. Being a member of those parties can only result in trouble. You can end up in jail, you can lose your job, your family members will be persecuted."

Philippines - Jihadists are escalating attacks

Turkiska myndigheter stänger inte Bursas enda kyrka


TURKIET

"De lokala myndigheterna i den nordvästra turkiska staden i Bursa beslöt att stadens enda kyrka, som betjänar fyra olika församlingar, skulle tömmas den 26 februari, men återtog beslutet tre dagar tidigare. Ismail Kulakcioglu, den protestantiska församlingen pastor, sade att de fick mindre än en vecka på sig att tömma byggnaden. Omkring 200 kristna använder kyrkan för sina söndagsgudstjänster i och med att fyra olika kristna samfund möts i byggnaden; en latin-katolsk, en tysk-katolsk, en öst-ortodox och en protestantisk församling. Under turkisk lag möter icke-muslimska trossamfund betydande lagliga hinder när de ska registrera en officiell kyrkobyggnad. Ofta delar flera församlingar på samma utrymme.

Kulakcioglu konstaterade att stadens ursprungliga beslut att stänga kyrkan gick emot stadens självutnämnda image som en religiöst tolerant stad. I ett pressmeddelande sade Kulakcioglu att han och de lokala myndigheterna ansåg att Turkiet är en kulturell mosaik och att de inte ville se den mosaiken krossas.

Pastorn har redan kommit överens om ett möte med Bursas borgmästare, Recep Altepe, för att underteckna ett nytt avtal om framtida bruk av kyrkobyggnaden.

Bursa är en konservativ stad med 2 miljoner invånare i den industriella Marmararegionen. Den ligger 160 km sydost om Istanbul och har av turkarna själva getts smeknamnet ”Gröna Bursa” både för skogarna intill staden och för dess muslimska identitet. Kyrkan är en kvarleva från en tid när Bursa hade en stor icke-muslimsk befolkning. Den byggdes på 1880-talet för att betjäna den lokala fransktalande befolkningen från Levanten (särskilt Libanon), latinska katoliker inom det ottomanska riket, som en del av en större helhet där det också fanns en högskola, och nära intill fanns också en begravningsplats.

De fyra församlingarna flyttade in i kyrkan efter att de restaurerat den åren 2002-2004. Den öppnades på nytt för gudstjänstbruk efter att man undertecknat ett avtal med staden Bursa. Vräkningen kom efter ett sannolikt misstag efter att avtalet gick ut 2015 och staden uppmanade församlingarna att på nytt ansöka om tillstånd. Ansökan togs positivt emot, men ”ett element” inom stadens fullmäktige motsatte sig det, sade Kulakcioglu. Bursas fullmäktige tillåter att byggnaden används för religiöst bruk, men församlingarna äger inte fastigheten. De kristna har inga juridiska rättigheter till byggnaden. De har bara rätt att använda kyrkan för närvarande, något som jag anser att är en mycket prekär situation. Medlemmar inom icke-majoritetsreligioner är beroende av byråkraters och majoritetens goda vilja. Dylika problem kommer att fortsätta att komma upp, tills de religiösa minoriteterna har rätt att äga sina kyrkor och rätt att på nytt få använda sina historiska kyrkor.

Kyrkan är fortfarande en symbol för stadens icke-muslimers kamp för att bli en accepterad del av samhället.

Kulakciolgu sade att han hade försökt övertyga fullmäktige att Bursa skulle förlora en ovärderlig del av sitt kulturella arv ifall församlingarna tvingades ut ur sin byggnad.

”Vi försöker förklara att denna kyrka, som används som gudstjänstlokal av olika församlingar, kanske är det enda i sitt slag i världen”, sade han."

EGYPTEN

"Egyptiska kristna har bett om förbön för fyra koptiska kristna tonåringar som den 25 februari dömdes för att ha hånat islam. I fjol gjorde de en video som var en parodi på den så kallade Islamiska staten. Muler Atef Daoud, Bassem Amgad Hanna och Albert Ashraf dömdes till fem års fängelse, medan Clinton Magdi Youssef, som är minderårig, sänds till ett ungdomsfängelse. Videon filmades av deras lärare Gad Youssef Younan, också han kristen, som vid en separat rättegång den 27 december 2015 dömdes till tre års fängelse för att ha skymfat islam.

Tonåringarna, som är gymnasieelever från byn al-Nasria i guvernementet al-Minya, arresterades i april och frigavs mot borgen 90 dagar senare. De var inte med vid rättegången, men förväntas nu arresteras på nytt. Deras advokat kommer att lämna in en överklagan. Advokaten och människorättsaktivister blev chockerade över att tonåringarna fick det hårdast möjliga straffet. Man hade väntat sig att de skulle bötfällas.

Vi ber att överklagan ska behandlas snabbt och gå igenom, och att läraren, studenterna och deras familjer ska kunna bo kvar i frid och ro i sin hemby. Vi ber också för verklig religionsfrihet i Egypten."

Religion has its goal to make men better. Christianity has as its goal to give them God's righteousness through faith. Anything that offers itself as a substitute for the righteousness of Christ is by definition an enemy of Christ and Christianity. This includes the law, if the law is understood as bringing righteousness before God. What then is the purpose of the law of God, which is good? It points out sin. No better purpose can it have."

For they suppose that the function of the law is to justify. "Sipping his coffee, Statkevich told me what it was like to be incarcerated for nearly five years. “They asked me to confess and beg for forgiveness from the president. If you sign this document, they told me, you can go home tomorrow. I refused. After years of pressure and isolation, they tried a new approach. Rather than isolate me, they forced me to share a cell with a certified psycho. I shared a cell with him for two months. I was only allowed to meet with my family once a year, for two hours each time, behind glass.… But I still refused to sign.”

As he was telling me about his ordeal, a young woman walked into the café. Rather than sit at any of the dozens of empty tables, she made a beeline for the booth directly next to ours. She sat down opposite me, took out her phone, and pretended to read. Statkevich paused, leaned forward and whispered: “I picked a café without any microphones hidden in the tables, so they have to do it the old fashioned way.” 



--- "For Washington, London, and Brussels, the prevailing wisdom today is to live with the dictatorial devil they know in Lukashenko, rather than risk yet another crisis ushered in by the democratic devil they don’t. As an added bonus, luring Belarus away from Putin would be a victory on the global chessboard.

But this approach has left brave Belarusian pro-democracy activists out to dry. Ales Byalyatski, a Belarusian opposition figure who spent three years in jail on politically motivated tax charges, says that little has really changed inside the country. “We are only hearing beautiful words from Belarusian diplomats about their readiness for cooperation [with the West],” he said. “Nevertheless, we are witnessing no actions in Belarus itself to improve the standing of democracy.”

In Minsk, spring may be around the corner. But for Belarusian democracy, Lukashenko’s winter is unlikely to end for years, even decades, as reformers are left out in the cold."
