ECI: några fakta som vi anser att det internationella samfundet bör känna till och beakta inför omröstningen

- En palestinsk statsdeklaration vid denna tidpunkt är ett brott mot internationell lag liksom ett brott mot Oslo-avtalen som stipulerar att ingendera parten i konflikten  får vidta ensidiga åtgärder innan en slutlig förhandlingslösning nåtts.

- Den palestinska myndigheten (PA) uppfyller inte kriterierna för en statsbildning, eftersom de inte har kontrollen över sitt område. Mahmoud Abbas har inte tillåtits besöka Gaza sedan han utvisades därifrån 2007. PA har inte heller gjort fred med sina grannar.

- En uppgradering i förtid av PA till en stat utan FN-medlemskap skulle i förväg definiera statsgränserna till stilleståndslinjerna 1967. Dessa är inga juridiskt erkända gränser enligt internationell lag. Slutgiltiga gränser kan endast uppnås genom förhandlingar, inte genom ensidiga deklarationer.

- Förslaget att utropa en palestinsk stat skulle dela Jerusalem och göra dess Gamla stad till huvudstad för en islamsk stat. Detta innebure att stadens heliga platser skulle stängas för det judiska folket, som också vore tvungna att lämna Gamla staden." (ECI 23.11.2012)
