Evangelium är ord av tröst - Words of comfort - Jesu ställföreträdande offer för oss

Jes. 40:1-2 "Trösta, trösta mitt folk! säger er Gud. Tala ljuvligt till Jerusalem och förkunna för det att dess vedermöda är slut, att dess missgärning är försonad, och att det har fått dubbelt igen av HERRENS hand för alla sina synder."

Evangelium är att Jesus har betalat för alla mänskors synd och skuld. Genom tron förstår vi att Guds nåd, barmhärtighet och förlåtelse gäller just oss.

Words of comfort

"For the author of this devotion, it has not been an easy fall. After a two year battle with bladder cancer, the Lord called my father home to heaven. It was not easy, especially since we live a long ways away from his home. This past summer the doctors told us 3-6 months, so we knew the time was short. Yet even though we could prepare for it, nothing prepares you fully for the loss.

What does a person say to one who has lost a loved one? What words are there to bring comfort? God gave the prophet Isaiah perhaps the perfect words to speak: “Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the LORD’s hand double for all her sins.”

Were there tears at the funeral? Was it hard to follow the hearse to the cemetery? Indeed. There is sadness and loss, but there’s also joy and comfort because for my father the hard times, the difficulties and struggles are over and that heaven is now his—all because Jesus, his Savior, had paid for all his sins. The pastor used my father’s confirmation verse, “Lo I am with you always…” That was God’s promise to him all his days and they are also words that continue into eternity. What comfort! What joy! What peace!

The best part is that these words don’t apply just to my father; they apply to all. Jesus has paid for the sins of all people. He suffered far worse than cancer. He suffered the very wrath of God while on the cross. Now, through faith in him as our one and only Savior, we know that these words of comfort and forgiveness apply to us. Through faith we know that we receive such mercy and kindness from the hand of our gracious God."

Prayer: 

Lord Jesus, comfort me with God’s declaration that my sins are forgiven—all because of your sacrifice in my place. Fill my heart with the peace of God that gives me the confidence to face death victoriously through you, my Savior. Amen.

Betraktelsens skribent skriver att det inte har varit någon lätt höst efter faderns bortgång i (urinblåse-) cancer, som han kämpade med i två år, innan Herren kallade honom hem, till himlen. Det var inte lätt eftersom man bor så långt ifrån varandra. Senaste sommar gav doktorn beskedet att fadern hade 3-6 månader kvar att leva, så man visste om att tiden var kort. Men trots att man trodde att man var förberedd, kunde man ändå inte helt föreställa sig förlusten.

Vad säger man till den som förlorat en kär anhörig? Vad finns det som tröstar? Gud gav kanske profeten Jesaja de perfekta orden: "Trösta, trösta mitt folk! Tala ljuvligt till Jerusalem och förkunna för det att dess vedermöda är slut, att dess missgärning är försonad, och att det har fått dubbelt igen av HERRENS hand för alla sina synder."

Grät vi under begravningen? Var det svårt att följa med transporten till kyrkogården? Ja, verkligen. Man känner sorg och förlust, men också glädje och tröst eftersom fars svåra tid; lidandet och kampen är över - och han nu har vunnit himlen eftersom Jesus, hans Frälsare, har betalat för alla hans synder.

Pastorn upprepade fars konfirmationsvers: "Lo, jag är med dig alla dagar..." Detta var Guds löfte till honom alla dagar och det är ord som fortsätter in i evigheten. Vilken tröst! Vilken glädje! Vilken frid!

Det bästa är att orden inte bara gäller min far, de gäller alla. Jesus har betalat för alla mänskors synd. Han led mycket mera än man gör med en cancersjukdom. Han utstod hela Guds vrede när han dog på korset. Nu vet vi genom tro på honom, som vår enda Frälsare, att dessa ord om tröst och förlåtelse gäller också oss. Genom tron vet vi att vi får ta emot en sådan nåd och barmhärtighet ur vår nåderike Guds hand.

Herre Jesus, trösta mig med Guds beslut att mina synder är förlåtna - allt beroende på ditt offer i mitt ställe. Fyll mitt hjärta med Guds frid som ger mig mod att en gång segervisst möta döden, med din hjälp, min Frälsare. Amen.
