Memorial moment - The gospel proclaims us righteous, it sings the verdict "not guilty"

Memorial moment. Rom. 3:19-26 (ESV)

"The gospel proclaims us righteous. It cries that our warfare is accomplished. It speaks the law silent. It sings the verdict "not guilty." This is the meaning of the Bible's doctrine of justification. For Christ's sake, our heavenly Father has proclaimed us righteous in His sight and He has done this without reference to the law. The law only shows our need, it does not bespeak us righteous. Only another word of God, the gospel, can do this. "

NOT OURS, BUT HIS

"Theologians of all generations have struggled to distinguish between law and gospel. One of the aspects of that struggle is simply the brute fact that the way of the law and the way of the gospel are contradictory. Luther says they are "non plus contraria," that there is nothing more contrary or opposed to each than the law and the gospel. Certainly, that contradiction must be left to stand. The law must remain the law. The gospel must remain the gospel. There is no need to straighten out or rationalize what God can certainly take care of on His own. We should be founded preaching the law and the gospel.

He uses the law to destroy our impious self confidence that presumes we can avoid the punishments of the law by obeying it and keeping it. We cannot obey it or avoid its punishments. Because of its implacability, the law burdens us so that there must be a new way of righteousness that comes apart from the law. The law kills. Somehow there must be life. The law condemns. Someone must pardon. The law accuses. There must be a stilling of that accusation. The tribunal of the law finds us guilty. Someone must defend us against it. Only Christ and a different message from God will do. Only the gospel will suffice.

The gospel proclaims us righteous. These are the two "high points" of what Paul writes to the Romans, not only that we are acquitted by the gospel, but also that such acquittal comes apart from the law. The righteousness we have is not our own, which would make it subject to the law. It is the righteousness of God; making it certain, because it depends of the divine promise. How can there be a righteousness apart from the law? With God there is nothing that is impossible.

Paul is not making this up. He wants his readers to understand that this was eternal faith of the church as testified to by the Old Testament. He is not just pulling this out thin air, but is claiming it was always the way of salvation. The God who is the same yesterday, today, and forever is standing behind this promise. The righteousness is none other than His own. This is why it is so dependable. It's not ours, but His."

John Chrysostom:

"'But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it' (Rm 3:21). Here Paul utters a great thing, and something that needed a great deal of proof. For if those who lived in the law not only did not escape punishment, but were the more weighed down by it, how apart from the law is it possible not only to escape vengeance, but even to be justified? For he has here set down two high points; both being justified and also obtaining these blessings without the Law. And this is why he does not say righteousness simply, but the righteousness of God, so by the worthiness of the person displaying the greater degree of the grace, and the possibility of the promise. For to Him all things are possible.

"He does not say, 'was given,' but 'manifested,' to invalidate the accusation of novelty. For that which is manifested, can be manifested because it is old, but has been concealed. And it is not this only, but what follows (Rm 3:21b) shows that this is no recent thing."

John Chrysostom, Homilies on Romans, 7

Prayer:

"Almighty God, heavenly Father, You granted righteousness to us in the person of Your Son. Help us to stand fast in the faith of the gospel, that all our trust might be in righteousness which is not our own, but Yours. Amen."

Ryssland lider

Bygg broar!

Moderlandet Ryssland (hon, den goda) lider också. Hon äter inte sina söner. Hon stillar sig i sorg och ber.

För alltid en del av hennes historia.

Boris Nemtsov, a great democrat and a courageous fighter for freedom is murdered

Russia. There are heroes...The bridge is broken. Build bridges.

Toomas Hendrik Ilves (president of Estonia): "I am shocked by the news that last night in front of the Kremlin opposition leader Boris Nemtsov former the Deputy Prime Minister of President Yeltsin, was callously murdered.

I personally knew Boris for a long time, he often visited Estonia and was a great admirer of Estonia’s reforms, especially of those related to the rule of law, whose implementation he considered to be the most important prerequisite for creation of democracy in Russia. Most recently we met in Sweden in last October, were we discussed the war in Ukraine and its larger implications. He was about to publish a study on the realities of the war in Ukraine.

I mourn a great friend of Estonia and of mine, a great democrat and a courageous fighter for freedom. My deepest condolences go to his family and to everyone who supported and shared Boris Nemtsov's aspirations for democracy."

The Guardian: "Russia robbed of a brave, authentic and distinctive voice"
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/feb/28/russia-robbed-of-a-brave-authentic-and-distinctive-voice
"Boris Nemtsov "spoke out strongly and vehemently against government corruption. Nemtsov opposed Putin’s annexation of Crimea and his covert war in eastern Ukraine. --- Nemtsov had spoken out against massive corruption in Sochi, as contractors built venues and palaces for the 2014 Winter Olympics."

BBC: "Russia opposition politician Boris Nemtsov shot dead"
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-31669061
"Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko described Mr Nemtsov as a "bridge between Ukraine and Russia" --- In a recent interview, Mr Nemtsov had said he feared Mr Putin would have him killed because of his opposition to the war in Ukraine. "

"Tsvetkov, Yushenkov, Shchekochikhin, Girenko, Klebnikov, Politkovskaya, Litvinenko, Markelov, Barburova, Estemirova, Magnitsky...and more."

Garry Kasparov: "Devastated to hear of the cold-blooded murder of my long-time opposition colleague Boris Nemtsov in central Moscow, quite close to the Kremlin. Shot four times, once for each child he leaves behind. A man of Boris's quality no longer fit Putin's Russia."

PAKISTAN

God's children pray

Memorial Moment
"Bible texts talk about our fallen nature. The heart of man is only evil continually (Gn 6:5)! - the texts that talk about conversion are those that refer to us as little children, capable of nothing.  - Jesus speaks to His Father in prayer just because He is the perfect Son. We are also made children of God in baptism; making the baptismal font the source of new life and the very font of prayer. As Jesus is God's Son, we are God's sons. Why pray? God's Son prays, and therefore God's sons pray."

GOD'S CHILDREN PRAY

"Why should we be amazed that Jesus prayed to His Father? What Father does not want to hear His child talk to Him? Even the babbling of a baby is the language that a father wants to hear. As we hear the baptismal liturgy used with an adult, we are sometimes troubled by the words that appear to be addressed to infants and small children. We wonder why there are not biblical texts more appropriate for adults. But what would such texts sound like? What would they be about? Would they talk of the great moral capacity of adults? Or the enormous strength of their spiritual will. Or about the good choices they make? Hardly! What Bible texts speak of such things? Bible texts talk about our fallen nature. The heart of man is only evil continually (Gn 6:5)! Instead, the texts that talk about conversion are those that refer to us as little children, capable of nothing.

At the font we confess that we are children of God. Who would want to be more than a child of God? What text ever calls us "adults of God?" What's better than being a child of God? Christ's constant prayer is actually evidence of His unity with His Father and therefore of His full divinity.

Jesus speaks to His Father in prayer just because He is the perfect Son. We are also made children of God in baptism; making the baptismal font the source of new life and the very font of prayer. As Jesus is God's Son, we are God's sons. Why pray? God's Son prays, and therefore God's sons pray."

Romans 8:9-17 (ESV)
https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans+8%3A9-17&version=ESV

Martin Luther:

"All this is said (Jn 16:26-27) to Christians for the purpose of giving them the boldness and confidence to rely on this Man and to pray with complete assurance; for we hear that in this way He unites us with Himself, really puts us on a par with Him, and merges our praying into His and His into ours. Christians can glory in this great distinction. For if our prayers are included in His, then He says: "I will tell of your name to my brothers" (Ps 22:22) and "The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs-heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ' (Rm 8:16-17). What greater honor could be paid us than this, that our faith in Christ entitles us to be called His brethren and coheirs, that our prayer is to be like His, that there is really no difference except that our prayers must originate in Him and be spoken in His name if they are to be acceptable and if He is to bestow this inheritance and glory on us. Aside from this, He makes us equal to Himself in all things; His and our prayer must be one, just as His body is ours and His members are ours. So St. Paul says: 'We are members of His body' (Eph 5:30), of His flesh and bone.

To give them greater comfort, Christ must remind His disciples of this glory in these last words of His; but He must do so by telling them that everything hinges on their belief that He was sent for this purpose in accordance with God's counsel and will, in order that they may pray confidently in His name and do everything Christians should do. For this dare not be omitted or forgotten. Otherwise they would pray and worship no differently from the way the Turks and the heathen do."

Martin Luther, Sermons on John's Gospel, 16.26-27

Lord Jesus Christ, teach us to pray that we might call upon Your Father as dear children ask their dear Father. Amen.

What is Lent? Fastetiden - Fasta är fokus på Kristus

Jes. 53:5. Jes. 1:16-20.
Concordia Publishing House:

"To prepare for the celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord on Easter Sunday, we take a season of 40 days to focus on our need to repent of our sins and our need of a Savior from sin. This is the season of Lent.

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday. The name, Ash Wednesday, comes from the ancient custom of imposing ashes on the worshippers. The pastor marks the forehead with a cross of ashes. Ashes are traditionally made from palm branches left from the previous Palm Sunday.

During this season worship services are penitential and solemn, and many churches add special Midweek services. Churches are decorated in violet, the color of royalty and repentance, reminding us to turn away from our sin and toward Christ for His mercy and forgiveness. During Lent we do not use “Alleluia.” Some churches even observe the ritual of “burying” the Alleluia at the beginning of Lent, with the joyous anticipation of its return on Easter Sunday.

Many fast, or give up eating a particular meal in order to devote time to prayer and studying God’s Word. Some may “give up something for Lent.” Similar to fasting, the person gives up something they enjoy as a reminder to pray and of the sacrifice that Jesus made for us."

Fastetiden

Fastetid. "Se vi går upp till Jerusalem..."
